7 Questions with #Author Kirsten Mortensen (Dark Chemistry) @Kirstenwriter #Romance #Suspense

How do you work through self-doubts and fear?
I’m a strong believer in facing your fears. In fact, I’ll go even further and say that facing our fears is one of the most important, and fulfilling, things we need to do during our lives. Fear can be an asset if we make friends with it, but if we habitually respond to fear by shrinking away from experiences, it can be enormously limiting. And what’s the point of being alive if you’re living inside a cage?

What scares you the most?
Reaching the end of my life and realizing that I’d failed to make the most of every opportunity that came my way. I’m not so worried about failing, but I’d consider my life wasted if I felt I hadn’t given my best effort to the things that mean them most to me: my writing and my connections with the people I love.

What makes you happiest?
Wringing the most out of any given moment, whatever it is I’m doing. It’s so important, in my opinion, to be fully present, whether you’re boiling water, making love, jumping out of an airplane, or holding the hand of a family member in a hospital. When I’m fully present, I’m happy in the deepest sense of the word.

What’s your greatest character strength?
My independence. I pride myself on being able to think for myself. And although I am part of a web of relationships—and rely very much on my family and loved ones for support in many ways—I am also comfortable with being on my own and taking care of myself and people dependent on me, if I need to. I believe this independence leads to personal happiness, for me, because if something in my life is bothering me, I automatically ask myself what I need to do to make changes for the better. I know that it’s up to me to fix my own problems, or if they can’t be fixed, find healthy ways to cope with them.

What’s your weakest character trait?
Lack of trust. It’s the “shadow side” of my independence. Sometimes it manifests in a hesitancy about trusting others, but most troubling, I suspect that I have a “go it alone” streak that cuts me off from support that would help me achieve the things I want to achieve in my life.

Why do you write?
This may come out as clichéd, but I write because I have to. There’s a part of my mind that is constantly assembling experiences—whether real or imagined—into words. I can’t imagine not giving that impulse room in my life to fulfill itself.

What motivates you to write?
There are three primary motivations. It starts with the pleasure I derive from writing—I simply enjoy it. Second is the desire to say certain things or explore certain scenarios. In my most recent novel, Dark Chemistry, for example, I wanted to explore some ideas I have about what love really is, and how people distinguish between physical attraction and “true love,” which is a spiritual and karmic bond. A third, and equally important motivation is my desire to share my creations with other people—and hopefully bring them pleasure in the process.

#BookReview - A 3rd Time to Die by @GeorgeBernstein #Romance #ReviewShare

A 3rd Time to DieA 3rd Time to Die by George Bernstein
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I had previously read Trapped by the same author and I loved it. I loved the strength in his lead character and the way it was written. I was looking forward to his second book but I was disappointed. Most of the story and how it was presented was as if the author was trying to rush completion of the book.

Two significant sections of the book point me in this direction. First, the Ashley-Craig back and forth didn't have to go on for so many pages. If they did in fact feel that strongly for each other and nothing for their spouses, it wouldn't have taken that long to part ways. Really. I've seen marriages with more emotions than theirs part ways sooner.

Second, (and this was my biggest peeve about this book) the formatting was beyond wonky. You had a variety of symbols for text. I figured I would I just buy a copy on Amazon, the copy there was just as dodgy which leads me to think - write a book, upload and go. If the formatting had been fine, I may have been more tolerant of the characters. Maybe. We'll never know.

Would I recommend this read? Not at all. But to be fair, I know some of my book club members who are currently reading this book who have a cleaner copy than the one I was given. Their reviews might be better.

Overall assessment:
Content: 3.5/5
Editing: 3.5/5
Formatting: 0.5/5
Pacing: 3.5/5
Offensive content?: Based on language and settings I would say this book is best suited for readers 13 years and older.

Disclosure: I received a review copy of this book from the author. I did not receive any payment in exchange for this review nor was I obliged to write a positive one.

7 Questions with #Author C.A. Szarek @caszarek #Romance #Suspense

How do you work through self-doubts and fear?
I think everyone has these unpleasant things. But I just motor through. Get the words on the page and tell the inner-editor to shut up until it’s the time to analyze the words. I am the toughest critic there is, so when I show someone a something of what I’ve written and they tell me it’s okay, I feel better a little bit, but it doesn’t always keep me from doubting. It is what it is, and I just have to work hard to get through it.
Why do you write?
Because I can’t NOT write. I have been writing since I was about eight years old. I always have, and I always will. It’s just who I am. It’s so much a part of me I can’t remember a time when I didn’t write something. I get grouchy when I don’t write. LOL.
Have you always enjoyed writing?
Yes. Writing is just a part of WHO I am. I can’t imagine NOT writing. It’s never quiet in my head…LOL. Someone always wants out. Wants their story documented.
What motivates you to write?
My characters. They won’t shut up until their stories are down. But seriously, I enjoy learning about them, forming them, holding their hand through crisis and watching them find love. It’s the hopeless romantic in me. They’re real to me and I want to share them with the world.
What writing are you most proud of?
Well, every time I finish a project, when I type “the end” I’m proud because writing is hard! LOL. And when you finish one, it’s a goal accomplished. Then it’s on to the next one. But…Collision Force (Crossing Forces Book One) my steamy romantic suspense series was my defining moment as a writer for a few reasons. I “met” the characters when I was 17. So they have been with me for a long time, and I adore them. It was my first venture into romantic suspense and I cried a lot when I was writing it. LOL.
And there’s just something about Cole Lucas.

What books did you love growing up?
Anything fantasy. I loved Tamara Pierce, Tanith Lee, Madeleine L’Engle, and Anne McCaffrey. I was also into the comic series, ElfQuest by Wendy and Richard Pini. I remember my fave young childhood book, I think I was in 3rd grade, was Jeremy Thatcher, the Dragon Hatcher, by Bruce Coville.
Who is your favorite author?
J.R. Ward and Anne McCaffrey (may she Rest in Peace). But honestly, there are so many AWESOME AWESOME authors out there I enjoy reading. Julie Garwood, Julia Quinn, Pamela Palmer, Monica McCarty, and many many many more.

Crossing Forces series:

Small Town Texas doesn't always mean small time crime.
Welcome to Antioch, population fifty thousand.
With a police department full of detectives and officers who are good at what they do, throw in the occasional FBI agent, and the bad guy doesn't have a shot, no matter how big the crime.
They work together and fight together. Relationships will be forged and changed along the twists and turns.
When fate intervenes, love and happiness can be found in unlikely places.

Crossing Forces by C.A. Szarek

This is book two in the Crossing Forces series
Vowing to protect her had nothing to do with feelings.
Detective Pete Crane catches a new shooting case and considers it business-as-usual. But when the lead witness is the Chief of Police’s fiery assistant, he never anticipated she’d challenge him—personally and professionally. Especially while under his protection.
Little do they know, the shooting she and her grandmother witnessed was anything but random.
Thrown together, their attraction sizzles, even though she’s squarely in the no-fly zone. She makes him break every rule in his little black book.
Nikki Harper has been attracted to Pete since they met two years ago. Witnessing a brutal shooting throws her into a stigma that’s always been her greatest fear—a victim. She has no choice but to accept his protective custody and let him help save her and her beloved grandmother.
Can Pete protect his witness and solve the case, while fighting the intense heat with Nikki?
