Author Interview – Michelle Rabe @michrabe

How do you work through self-doubts and fear?

I usually don’t work when I’m feeling very uncertain about my writing, when I feel like that I tend to do something that takes my mind and creativity to a different place, for me it’s photography. More often than not when I go back to writing it’s good. I also listen to Stephen King’s book ‘On Writing’ it’s an excellent book.

What scares you the most?

Spiders. I have a bad case of arachnophobia.

What makes you happiest?

A lazy morning with a good book and my cat sleeping beside me.

Why do you write?

Because I love telling stories and I think I’d go mad if I didn’t let them out.

What writing are you most proud of? (Add a link if you like)

My novel ‘Cast in Blood’ it’s available on Amazon as of December 17th 2013.

The Forgotten Child by Lorhainne Eckhart @LEckhart

So what made this morning different? She didn’t know how to explain this awakening, this unfolding from deep inside some place she thought had long since closed and sealed off. Find some courage. Believe enough in herself, and then she’d soon be living a life that was hers, for the first time, filled with an amazing peace and hope. And that’s what compelled Emily to shake off her 10-year funk, throw her thin, pale legs over the side of the bed, and get up.
Emily, a 35-year-old, average-looking mother and wife, slipped into the ugly brown bathrobe her husband bought her this past Christmas. The one he meant to give his mother but got confused after he wrapped them, since the boxes were identical. His mother got the old lady polyester pants with the elastic waistband meant for Emily, so she supposed she got the better of the deal.
She held her breath when she chanced a glance at Bob, who lay softly snoring on his side of the big bed; the fact he was still asleep eased her anxiety. Emily suppressed a sigh of relief. She had no interest in spending time in a room with this man, any more than the grumpy old geezer up the street. Maybe that was why the knot in her tummy loosened when she left the room and stood outside their daughter’s door. Katy, her blonde two-year-old beauty, was sleeping like an angel in the bedroom across the hall, in their average, very plain, box-style rented bungalow. Emily tiptoed across the cheap neutral-colored carpeting, the same quality you see in most rental homes, which showed every stain imaginable, even after shampooing year after year. She pressed her hand on the doorframe and pulled Katy’s door closed so she wouldn’t hear Emily at this early hour. Five a.m. was her personal time, when her head was clear, when her creative juices flowed, when she faced reality and could make the tough decisions with absolute clarity.

The King of Sunday Morning by J.B. McCauley @MccauleyJay

The Mile End Mambo
1990
He held him in his arms and looked into the glassy eyes. Yellow flecks dotted the cornea. This boy was dead a long time before Roger had run him through. He knew the look. Too much top shelf and not enough down time.
The body from which life dramatically seeped away began to convulse. It would not be a Hollywood death. It would be a harsh demise for this gangster. Unexpected but unavoidable. He had stepped on the wrong toes and nobody touched Roger’s patch.
The big screen had always glamorised death but there was nothing glamorous about having a gaping 12-inch gash where your stomach had once been. Roger’s white shirt was splattered with blood and sputum. He noted to himself with an air of cold detachment that he would have to dispose of it later. The boy soldier’s back arched in agony. A gurgling noise rushed from his throat and then he was gone.
Roger put his arm underneath the boy’s knees and slowly lifted him from the red morass that had filled the doorway. He cradled him in his arms and walked slowly along the pavement. A young couple averted their gaze as he struggled with the limp body. They knew not to look. This was after all the witching hour in the East End. What you don’t see, you can’t tell. He turned the corner and moved into another shop doorway. It was a Dixon’s electrical shop exalting the latest stereos and TV’s.
Roger placed the body carefully on the ground. He took one final look at what 10 minutes ago had been the epitome of arrogance, bravery and youth, then left. He walked quickly to the edge of Walters Street, turned into Burden and darted through a now deserted car park and onto Rially. He saw a red telephone box just up from Dunston Road. He opened the door and tried to ignore the stench of piss and shit. He dialled the number and waited patiently for the connection.
“Rudi?”
His rich baritone West-Indian voice caressed the receiver.
“Yeah, he’s in Dixon’s shopfront on Walters Street.” He paused, digesting the question on the other end of the line.
“Yeah he’s dead. Dead as a door nail. See you at home.”
With that, he hung up the phone and disappeared into the night. His red Rasta beanie swaying as he loped through the shadows. The victim wouldn’t be missed. Roger had nothing to fear. The status quo had been maintained and an example had been made.
Most of all, Rudi would be pleased.

Caroline Kennedy – What Inspired Me to Write My Book? @StephenWardBook

What Inspired Me to Write My Book?
It was a gradual process and even more gradual decision. I was commissioned to research a TV film on “The Profumo Affair” of the early 1960s. After a year of personal interviews, trips to the newspaper libraries and travelling around the UK following leads, I came to realize that I had far more material than could possibly ever be used in a 90 minutes film.
I also came to the obvious conclusion that War Minister, John Profumo, was not the focal point of my research. The far more interesting, complex and fascinating character in the whole “Profumo Affair” was the society osteopath, Stephen Ward.
My realization was confirmed when I was invited to a rambling farmhouse in Lincolnshire where my host invited me to open a trunk in his attic which, he said, contained handwritten manuscripts, reel-to-reel tapes and letters, all written or recorded by Stephen Ward while he was on remand in prison awaiting trial.
When I returned home that evening I immediately set about transferring the tapes onto cassettes and, through the scratchy quality of the 1960s recordings, emerged Ward’s compelling voice.
So, after over a year of discussing Stephen Ward with almost 100 people who had known him, I finally heard his voice summing up his case very objectively and very succinctly. I was mesmerized. I realized then that a grave miscarriage of justice had taken place and, above anything else, I wanted to rectify it.

Author Interview - E. G. Gaddess

Image of E G Gaddess

Tell us a bit about your family?

I am married, with a 17-year-old daughter. I have been with my husband for over 20 years and plans to stay with him for at least 20 more. My disabled mother also lives with us. My mother and daughter love my writing. My husband, just doesn't get why I want to.

What makes you happiest?

Writing - and liking what I have written. When it is crap, I;m not happy.

Why do you write?

There are stories whirling around in my head, and I think if I didn't get them out, I might go a little mad.

Have you always enjoyed writing?

Yes. My mother has copies of stories I wrote in the first grade. And according to her, I was always making up stories. Not necessarily a good thing.

What books did you love growing up?

In elementary school, I read and enjoyed whatever book I could get my hands on. I loved them all. As a teen, I liked romance, and would sneak my mother's Harlequins under the blankets at night. I liked fantasy and gothic stuff, too. Phyllis A Whitney, Anne Mccaffrey.

If there any books you really don't enjoy?

I'm not particularly fond of westerns, and, though my husband absolutely loves them, adventures written for men. I'm not fond of horror either, though I do like suspense.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

Sometimes, from dreams. Which is where Dhampyr Heritage came from, though the end product strayed significantly from the dream. Sometimes, I just find a writing prompt that works for me, though more often than not, I can't write from a prompt. I have a current MG projects I'm working on that came from a real-life event, but I am struggling with that because it is personal, and my writing group keeps telling me it should happen differently.

What marketing works for you?

I'm hoping this blog tour works for me. I'm new to the marketing game. I was very naive with Dhampyr Heritage. I just thought I could write the story, put it out there and it would sell. I can tell you that strategy doesn't work very well.

Do you plan to publish more books?

Oh, yes. I plan the dhampyr series to be four books. The next one deals with Isabel, Gideon and Edwin's sister, and the last will be Christian's, the young vampire. I also have an idea for some steampunk stories, but I'm not sure of their end form yet.

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?

Though I love Virginia, where I live now, I would love to move back north, to Maine, closer to where I came from. Family would be closer there. I would love to spend an extended time in Europe, especially Portugal, where Dhampyr Heritage started out at. But I wouldn't want to settle there permanently. I think I would like extended stays of six months to a year in several places - maybe with a home base for Christmas in Maine.

How do you write - lap top, pen, paper, in bed, at a desk?

I have a lap top, and I do most of my writing there. However, I have pen and paper next to my bed for when I wake up from a dream with an idea, or by relaxing my brain has been able to come up with a solution to a plot problem. I also write poetry (not necessarily good) and I use paper and pencil for that.

Every writer has their own idea of what a successful career in writing is, what does success in writing look like to you?

I would love to be able to support myself and my family from my writing. But that is not the only kind of success. I am proud that I have a small group of loyal readers who keep asking when my next book comes out. My books aren't necessarily mainstream - bad guy vampires with a positive Christian theme aren't what everyone is looking for. Which has meant that I get some bad reviews for my novels - these aren't Twilight or the Vampire Diaries. My vampires represent evil. My proudest moment was when a teen reader contacts me to tell me that she "got" what I was saying in my novel - and asked about a sequel. That is the epitome of success for me.

David Litwack – Ideas are everywhere @DavidLitwack

Ideas are everywhere
What do the following have in common? A rustic stone church in Boothbay Harbor, Maine; Mt. Etna; the Temple of Zeus in Agrigento, Sicily; the old merry-go-round in Oak Bluffs on Martha’s Vineyard; the Chihuly Glass Museum in Seattle; and the Palantine Chapel in Palermo. (click here to see pictures)
All of these are sources of inspiration for my next novel, the sequel to There Comes a Prophet.
I’ve always believed that the difference between the creative and non-creative person is not the ability to come up with new ideas, but rather being open to them when they present themselves. That’s why it’s so important to write regularly.
When I’m writing every day, I live in two worlds, the evolving world of my story and my real life, day-to-day world. As a result, when I see something that strikes me, my mind starts making connections. The places I visit, the images I see morph into scenes in my story. What would the mood of the setting be like? What are the sounds? The smells? How would my characters see it? Would they touch the ancient stones and flashback to their own past? Would they scoop up a fistful of volcanic soil and, finding it hot, appreciate the immensity and power of their world? In what way would these experiences change them and therefore alter their actions and the course of the plot.
Out comes my smart phone. I take a few pictures, and type some hasty notes. Then, when I get home, I rough out a new scene. Does it always fit in to the story? Of course not. But it gets my creative juices flowing.
When I reread a copy of a soon-to-be-submitted novel for the final time, I always wonder how it all had come to pass. It seems like a mystery, a miracle of the muse. But I know this: if I’m open to new ideas and follow their threads, one thing leads to another. A paragraph gets written, then a page and a scene. And a couple of years later, after much blood, sweat and tears, voila–instant novel.

Becoming Human (The Exilon 5 Trilogy, Book 1) by Eliza Green @elizagreenbooks

Eliza Green

Two Worlds. Two Species. One Terrifying Secret.

In 2163, a polluted and overcrowded Earth forces humans to search for a new home. But the exoplanet they target, Exilon 5, is occupied. Having already begun a massive relocation programme, Bill Taggart is sent to monitor the Indigenes, the race that lives there. He is a man on the edge. He believes the Indigenes killed his wife, but he doesn’t know why. His surveillance focuses on the Indigene Stephen, who has risked his life to surface during the daytime.

Stephen has every reason to despise the humans and their attempts to colonise his planet. To protect his species from further harm, he must go against his very nature and become human. But one woman holds a secret that threatens Bill’s and Stephen’s plans, an untruth that could rip apart the lives of those on both worlds.

BECOMING HUMAN, part one in the Exilon 5 trilogy, is a science fiction dystopian adventure that you won’t want to put down.

˃˃˃ Thought Provoking SciFi, Dystopian Tale – Compulsion Reads

I would happily recommend this book to fans of dystopia, science fiction and conspiracy lovers. You will be in for an exciting ride.

˃˃˃ Excellent Use of ForeShadowing – Masquerade Crew

This book demonstrates why I read Indie books and have enjoyed doing so immensely. Yes, some self-published books don’t deserve to see the light of day, but this isn’t one of those. Far from it. It was exciting and it had mystery. It sets up the next book while still giving you closure in this one–a difficult task for a book in a series.

Great White House by Christoph Paul @ChristophPaul_

Prologue

Most stories should not start with “it was a dark and stormy night” but this evening in Washington, DC could be described no other way. A great storm was raging, as were key members of Congress and other important figures. The politicians waited in silence staring at a blank satellite screen for the eccentric Chinese President Xi Jinping to appear and discuss the massive debt America owed China.

The group was in the East Room of the White House above the library, where a small window reflected the faces of those who had enough ‘klout’ to sit at the round table with President Obama and Vice President Biden.

It would be any news reporter's dream to sit alongside these political heavyweights, but the “China Task Force” or C.T.F. had made this a closed conference, top-secret event. So secret, even Snowden didn’t know about it.

Even if the White House let the press in, the reporters would not have made it through the heavy downpour in Washington, DC. Visibility in the city was close to zero. Normal traffic ended hours earlier as young and old government employees hunkered down in their favorite bars to weather the storm.

Now, rain poured so hard the echoes of the downpour shot through the White House, giving attention to the awkward silence in the East Room.

As the large teleprompter screen remained blank, an animated Michele Bachmann broke the silence. “I just don’t trust these Chinese, even with their food. My husband ends up having problems with his rectal area after he eats it when I’m away. You should see the fees I pay his proctologist. Thank the good Lord we don’t have ObamaCare or he wouldn’t be able to walk.”

The other members of the C.T.F. remained silent, as most believed Mr. Bachmann to be a closeted homosexual. Being the peacemaker, President Obama wanted to avoid any divisive issues. “Yes. I understand. Chinese food, though delicious, bothers my stomach and Michelle’s as well Congresswoman Bachmann.”

Joe Biden rose from his chair and headed toward the decanter on a table at the side of the room. “Hey, Barry, I thought it was only black guys that were late, not the Chinese. Ha. That's good one.”

The oft-amused Biden smiled and gave a self-satisfactory laugh. President Obama shook his head, grateful the press wasn’t here to catch another ‘JoeGaffee.’ Biden poured himself a glass of scotch as Obama popped a piece of Nicorette in his mouth.

“Since this meeting is 'not official,' I suppose it's all right to have a drink.” Biden cheered the room. He brought another cup over to Wisconsin Representative Paul Ryan and sat back down; the two had become close since their 2012 Vice Presidential debate and would drink over the ‘malarkey’ of the day.

Eric Cantor, next to his also-tanned counterpart Majority Leader Boehner, was fed up with the jokes. “In all seriousness, what the Chinese President is doing is a power move. It’s a psychological display of dominance. You can’t trust a communist.”

Senator Ted Cruz slammed his fist on the table. “Those commies will play mind games. I agree.”

Congresswoman Pelosi raised her hand. “Excuse me, but I’m more worried about this storm. We might be stuck here.” She gestured at the window. “This storm has gotten dangerous. I'm telling you, it's global warming. Only global warming could cause a downpour of this magnitude! My constituents are very worried about this issue and so am I.”

Democrat Senator Harry Reid and Socialist Bernie Sanders agreed but Congresswoman Bachmann and Congressman Tim Scott shook their heads in annoyance and said a silent prayer for the socialists in the room.

Other Republicans rolled their eyes at Pelosi’s statement. Libertarian-leaning Senator Rand Paul responded, “If global warming even exists, the market will fix it. What we need to worry about is the debt. The Chinese have every right to call this emergency meeting and to want their money.”

Ben Bernanke and Tim Geithner (who was called out of retirement to help out the C.T.F.) nodded in approval of Senator Paul’s market solution.

President Obama took a deep breath and offered a fake but serene glance to acknowledge Paul's statement. He put his hand up and quieted the room. “Now, now, let's not have the global warming debate right now, folks. There is talk that the Chinese are very upset about our debt and want us to pay now, which is a surprise to us all. But that is not the only reason for this emergency meeting. The NSA has heard some terrorist chatter about an attack on Annapolis that could dismantle many of our Navy’s resources. They say the Chinese might know about it. We might be in for a long night. Look, if the storm gets worse, you can sleep here; it’s a big house. We can sell to it to the press as a political sleepover. They’ll find that cute and bipartisan.”

New York Senator Schumer rubbed his temples in frustration. “Oi vey, I don’t have my Ambien.”

Senator McCaskill gave him a nice Missouri smile.

“It’s okay, Chuck. You can have some of mine. Senator Rubio, I have some bottled water if you need it, too.”

The group laughed and Senator Rubio inwardly grimaced at the overused joke but mustered a smile that only a man running for President in 2016 could pull off.

Senator McCain put down his unfinished poker game. “You pansies and your sleeping pills. When I was in Vietnam I slept on pure steel and spider shit… President Obama, sir, I’m sick of waiting for these communists. Either you call them or I will.”

President Obama saw an annoyed crowd and felt the temperature in the room rising. On days like this he was sick of being President but he knew this was not a time for self-pity. He looked out at the storm and thought of his Kenyan father herding goats in this type of downpour. His father would not have been deterred by hardships like this. The President sighed with finality. “All right, John, enough is enough. Let’s get President Xi Jinping on screen. We’ve waited long enough.”

Space Dude by Jann Jeter @Hasty_Post

“Come on Dude, quit fiddlin’ with the controls. We’re not gonna get there any faster.” said the co-pilot with his Earth-side British Isles accent. His name was Thippeswamy Maxwell Dillon, but for obvious reasons he goes by ‘Thipp’. His parents had named him after an Indian friend, a gynecologist and a sheriff from a long ago earth vid.
“Yeah, sure. Who knows what’s  gonna happen when I punch any of these buttons. We could wind up blowin’ this thing up or ending up in a different dimension or time or something. I should just give up tryin’ to get this crate to move at any speed resembling fast,” the pilot grumbled with a frustrated sigh.
Harry Holman Gordon, more commonly known as ‘Dude’, ‘Dood’, ‘Space Boy’, ‘SD’ or ‘Space Dude’, reached for a bag of potato chips in a plain white generic-looking bag sitting on the dashboard of the craft. He leaned back in the captain’s chair and began munching on the chips.
“Ya know, I wish we’d been able to pick up more of these chips over on Qolk. They’re pretty good considering the ‘use-by’ date was 15 years ago,” Dude remarked in between his chips. For a big man he was considerably dainty in that he only picked up one chip at a time out of the bag. Of course, he went back in to the bag 20 times before finally folding the top down and putting the bag on the dashboard again.
Thipp snapped his head around to stare at his captain. “Dude – you bought all they had! Fifty Cases! We still have 39 cases left in the cargo bay! How could you possibly want more?”  Thipp’s voice began to rise in volume and made Dude turn to look at his co-pilot.
“Hey, man, a good deal is a good deal, no matter what. Besides, it’s not like we don’t have the room. There’s hardly anything down there right now.”  Dude said as he shrugged and reached for the bag again. He picked another single chip out of the bag, folded the top down and put it back on the dash.
Thipp continued to look at him and one eyebrow shot nearly to the tattered roof lining of the vessel. “You’re joking – right?  I mean seriously joking?  Have you even bothered to check out what we DO have in the cargo bay?”
Dude looked over at him with a brief, confused flash of his eyes.
“Ummm. Well, actually, I was thinking about going down there, but what with the Ionians attacking the ship and – Man – they were really SHOOTING at us – did you see that??  Like real lasers, man! They just barely missed the back window and I would really hate to lose that Kesey quote. He’s like my idol, man. Seriously….”
“Dude! You haven’t been in the bay since before we got attacked?”  Thipp asked in a tone not quite verging on icy, “YOU haven’t even gone down there for a single minute to make sure your precious potato chips are still there?  What if I told you I had to dump them back on Ion to lighten the load so we could get the heck outta there???”
Dude got a panicked look on his face and began to sputter, “Man. Oh, man! Don’t tell me you really dumped my chips!  You wouldn’t do that to me, would ya?  You’re a piece of work, Thipp – you are a mean son of a gun if you’d dump my chips! They don’t weigh that much anyway!” He briefly shook his curly head and looked straight ahead.
Thipp looked back at Space Dude with a somber look that said ‘You are on my last nerve’ but then suddenly grinned. “Okay, put this barge on auto pilot and let’s go check it out!”
Dude considered it for just a second and then shrugged his shoulders. “Sure. No time like the present – right?”

Author Interview – Jann Jeter @Hasty_Post

Why do you write?
I write because I have to. I wrote my first book in middle school – on notebook paper no less and tied it all together with a shoestring. In high school and college I wrote poetry, even making it into an anthology while I was in high school. From poetry I slipped into writing songs and music, but that ended when I broke a finger and it never healed – couldn’t do fingering anymore. Writing is something I’ve always done, and books are just the culmination of the road I’ve been on. I love to write!
Have you always enjoyed writing?
Oh, yes! I started writing in middle school with stories about some of my favorite tv characters, and then wrote a book on notebook paper tied together with a shoestring. It’s awful by the way. It’s up in my attic somewhere in a box. Still, it was an accomplishment to write that many pages. Next I moved on to poetry, then to songs and music. About 5 years ago I was laid off my job and decided it was now the time to get that book lounging around inside me out into the open. Now I’m working on the third book in the series.
What books did you love growing up?
I think my mom started me on the old ‘Bobbsey Twins’ books. I also read the ‘Nancy Drew’ books, and the ‘Trixie Belden’ series of books. After those I went to other sorts of books; much as I hate to admit it I read romance novels in high school. Then in college I went in for science-fiction and fantasy. I still read on a daily basis; I think I currently have over 400 books on my kindle and they are all over the place genre wise.
How did you develop your writing?
Gosh. I’m not sure I have a good answer for that. People have always told me I’m a good writer – I had a composition teacher in high school that encouraged me to write. There’s just something about putting words down, either on paper or on a computer screen, and having them make sense and eliciting some sort of emotion from people the drives me. I like to write funny things, but I like to do the drama thing as well. ‘Space Dude – the Novel’ has a lot of fun written into it. The second book, ‘Space Dude – the Trouble with Travels’ is a little darker, but still has a lot of fun in it. My third book is much darker, and truthfully, I’m not sure where all that darkness is coming from, but even it has some lighter moments. It seems to be a natural progression.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
I really have an affinity for these characters I’m currently writing about, so I have to say they inspire me. One of the reviews I got on Amazon.com for the first book said, “…into that universe, she dropped the true treasure of Space Dude – its characters. Jeter obviously got to know these characters deeply before (and as) she wrote about them, and her passion for this rag-tag bunch of authentic, lovable folks shines through on every page!”

Author Interview – Merry Farmer @merryfarmer20

Image of Merry FarmerTell us a bit about your family.  – I’m fairly lucky, as a writer, to come from a family of artists, writers, actors, teachers, and historians.  My mother’s maiden name is Gyllenhaal, and yes I’m related to those Gyllenhaals.  The amazing thing about our family is that no matter how outlandish the thing we’ve been passionate about is, we have always encouraged each other.  It’s amazing what you can accomplish with a little support.

How do you work through self-doubts and fear?  It’s not easy, let me tell you!  I am full of self-doubt on a regular basis.  The important thing is to remember why you are writing (or painting or dancing or playing a sport) in the first place.  It’s something you love.  And it may seem counter-intuitive, but sometimes the best thing you can do to get over your fears is take a step back, breathe, rest, and build up the energy to rush into the hard work again.

What scares you the most?  Never being able to follow my dreams.  Being stuck in Corporate America forever! *LOL*  That and yellow-jackets.  *shivers*

What makes you happiest?  It sounds a little trite, but it’s true: writing makes me happy.  That moment when you are in the zone and the story seems to be writing itself is bliss.  Aside from that, though, playing with my “friend baby” (my best friend’s daughter) and volunteering with children.

What’s your greatest character strength?  I think it would have to be loyalty.  I am exceptionally loyal to my friends and the causes I believe in.

But when that demon attacks her in her kitchen, retirement is no longer an option.
Now Kate has to kick a little demon butt, figure out why the creatures are trying to take her out and take over her home town, and at the same time take care of her 2 year old, deal with a hormonal 14 year old, get the family to Catholic mass on time, and try to keep her past a secret from her daughter and her husband.
She's a little out of practice, but hey ... if she can juggle two kids and an impromptu dinner party, ridding the town of demons should be a piece of cake. Like the saying goes, Carpe Demon ... and Kate intends to do just that.

Author Interview – Abigail Hawk @VL_Dreyer

Tell us a bit about your family.
I’m the offspring of a giant, tattooed biker computer technician, and an astrologer.  No, really.
How do you work through self-doubts and fear?
I have a group of close friends that I know I can trust, and that share my passions.  Whenever I’m feeling down, I just talk to them, tell them what’s bother me, and let them put the pieces back together.
What scares you the most?
Spiders, deep water, and small children screaming.  No, seriously – the first two are phobias, and the last one is related to a medical condition I have that leaves me with hyper-sensitive hearing.  Babies crying and small children wailing are extremely painful to me.
What makes you happiest?
It sounds corny, but… talking to readers, and discussing my characters with people that are interested in hearing more about them.  I love my characters far more than anyone should.  They’re like my children, and I’m proud of them even when I’m being mean to them.
What’s your greatest character strength?
Unsurprisingly, it’s creativity.  I’m a very creative person by nature.  In addition to writing, I illustrate comic books, weave chainmail,  enjoy working with metal and wood, and even do a little sewing on the side.  I recently decided to do a diploma in Fashion Design, and enjoyed it immensely!
What’s your weakest character trait?
I was poorly socialised as a child, because I was always more interested in burying my nose in a book than being out playing with other kids.  This has leaked over into my adult years, where I still struggle to speak in groups.  I am a very shy person.
Why do you write?
I write because I love it.  I write because it’s part of who I am.  I write because I enjoy telling stories, and creating whole new worlds to explore.  I am a world-builder – that is, someone who creates an entire world to set their stories in, rather than using the real world – and bringing those worlds to live is my passion, and my calling.
Have you always enjoyed writing?

Yes, but only for pleasure.  Believe it or not, I always hated creative writing at school.  I hated art at school as well.  I feel that with creative subjects, there is no right and wrong way to do them, so having a teacher standing in judgement feels very wrong to me.  My teachers and I used to argue for hours.

Rebekah's Quilt by Sara Barnard @TheSaraBarnard

Elnora’s lips thinned into a smile and she reached for the cup of buttermilk. Rebekah noticed a slight tremble in her fingers.

“Here Ma, I’ll get it.” Worry creased her brow as she passed the frothy liquid to Elnora.

After taking a big swill, Elnora answered, “I’m alright. The baby is acting like it wants to come.” She lay back onto the pillows. “You may be a big sister again before too long.”

As much as she loved babies, especially new ones, Rebekah couldn’t force a smile onto her lips. Instead, a peppering of questions flew off her tongue. “How do you know the baby is coming? Are you in pain? Is something wrong?” She flung the words at her mother in much the same manner as Jeremiah flung dirt clods at their little brothers during one of their many “you-can’t-hit-me-with-that-dirt-clod-ouch-maybe-you-can” games.

“I began feeling pain early this morning.”

Rebekah’s eyes widened. Before she could open her mouth to speak, Elnora continued. “Then the bleeding started.”

“Oh Ma, I should fetch Heloise,” Rebekah said, rising from the bed. Her mind was already way ahead of her body.

“No child.” Elnora tried to make her voice firm. It didn’t work.

“Why not?”

“We mustn’t bother her yet. The pains have stopped and to make the baby come, they have to be regular. And hard.” It appeared that just speaking of the process that happens to bring a baby

was sapping the very life from her mother. She patted her pale hand.

“Just tell me what you need, Ma. I’ll do it.”

Elnora’s closed her eyes. “I know you will, Rebekah. Thank you.” Her words trailed off in a yawn.

Julia (The Good Life series) by Sarah Krisch

Julia

The Good Life Book One

Chapter 1

1.

...and looking out on the two acres of newly planted seedlings, I feel a sense of satisfaction that only working your own land can bring. Although my back is sore and dirt cakes my fingernails, I know that the land gives back so much more than the effort I put into it. Inhaling the fragrant spring air, feeling the sun's gentle warmth, I am at peace. For tonight, my family will feast on cream of asparagus soup, an early season tossed green salad, and a crusty home-baked bread that melts on your tongue. Pair this with a bottle of local elderberry wine, and you're living the good life.

Julia closed her eyes, her fingers a hair's width from striking the laptop's keyboard. She could almost feel the sun on her cheeks, smell the freshly turned soil. It was a comfort she would often recall whenever she needed a reminder of some of the happiest moments of her life. As a child she'd spent her summer months living at her grandparents' farm in Harmony Grove, Iowa. In retrospect, those quaint, stuck-in-time summer vacations were a great way to grow up, but she couldn't be happier having moved to Chicago—or living with Nora, her best friend since they'd been paired as college roommates eight years ago.

The click of high heels brought her out of her reverie. Julia looked up to see the overly made-up face of the nail tech as she glanced at the timer and whispered, "Five more minutes." Julia nodded and looked back at her laptop screen.

She sighed, happy to have finished another weekly column. Not only was it finished, it was actually pretty darned good. Nine months of weekly columns… she never imagined it would last so long, or that she would even have enough to write about to keep it fresh and interesting. When she'd started the column as a simple blog she never thought anyone would read it. But somehow, in the mysterious workings of the internet, her little Wordpress blog had garnered a following, a following that soon outgrew the free domain world of Wordpress. Her blog, The Good Life, had been syndicated by the Chicago Herald website for six months. Her thousand loyal readers had now become ten times that amount, and growing.

She saved the file to her laptop, careful not to smudge her manicure, and then emailed a copy to her editor at the Herald.

When the timer went off, Gloria, the owner of the salon, approached with a smile and lifted the hairdryer. "How was your day of beauty?"

Julia stood up from the pedicure drying station and glanced down at her toes. "I finally look worthy of the gorgeous Jimmy Choos I bought last week. They only cost me a month's worth of columns."

"I don't know how you get any work done here with all of this racket going on."

"When I'm working on my column, I'm not really here," Julia said as she closed her computer and stowed it in her laptop bag. "I'm at the farm."

"You sure don't look like a farm girl to me."

"And thanks to all of your fabulous skills, I never will." Julia wiggled her fingernails, gleaming with fresh polish. She hadn't had her hands in freshly turned soil in many years.

"None of your readers suspect that you're really just a city girl with an active imagination?"

"No, ma'am. That's one of the reasons I keep coming back to you. Beautician-to-client confidentiality," Julia said with a wink.

"Your secrets are safe with me, girl," Gloria said as she walked Julia to the cash register. "Same time next week?"

Julia handed over her well-used Visa. "You know I can't resist."
