What is your least favorite quality about yourself? The flipside of being insatiably curious about everything (my favorite quality), is that I have the attention span of a gnat with ADD, and it’s difficult to concentrate on a task without the sense that a huge number of interesting things are happening around me and I don’t know about them. I noticed that social media has made my inability to focus worse, and I’m now consciously trying to limit my Internet time. Not very successfully so far.
How did you come up with the title? “Poison pill” is a legal term. It relates to a contract provision that makes an undesirable action by a party so extremely costly that it virtually guarantees that party won’t do it. A poison pill provision plays an important role in the plot of POISON PILL. In addition the book is about a bad diet drug — so POISON PILL seemed like a perfect double entendre title.
What is your greatest strength as a writer? From a technical standpoint, readers comment almost uniformly that they love the dialogue. They say it has authenticity, it’s witty, and the characters’ voices are distinct and consistent.
Personally, I think my greatest strength is describing complex scientific and legal concepts in a way that is accessible to a non-expert, without being condescending or boring. And I should be pretty good at this by now — this is what I do in my day job as a patent litigator.
Did writing this book teach you anything and what was it? Writing POISON PILL taught me the value of committing to a goal and working toward it without having the perfect plan of action or a detailed map. A friend once jokingly said that if there were books on how to cross the street, I’d read all of them before attempting an actual crossing, and she’s probably right. I often use the need to acquire theoretical knowledge as a means to postpone attempting the actual doing of something.
With this novel, I just plunged in. I started writing. Then I started editing. Then I found a writing group to provide critiques. Then I found a professional editor. Each step was a learning process on the go, and brought with it valuable experience. So now I’m far less reticent about doing things and learning from my mistakes.
Do you intent to make writing a career? I consider writing to be a career already. It cannot be a full-time career right now for financial reasons, but I take it just as seriously as I take my work as a lawyer. It is definitely not a hobby.

What is your favorite quality about yourself? Self-motivation. It’s taken me a long way through all my pursuits, from being the kid who got herself up and dressed without any help in the mornings, to starting my own business and running it for over a decade, to sticking with the challenges of writing and publishing, which are myriad.
What is your least favorite quality about yourself? I have what I call “empathy in the extreme”…a tendency to care a little too much about other people’s problems in a way my darling husband might call co-dependent.

What are you most proud of accomplishing so far in your life? I am most proud of having started and maintained a successful writing/editing business, and living the creative life I love by the age of 30.

What is your favorite food? Much too much of a pleasure seeker to have only one favorite food. A big fan of comfort food-y pasta and grain dishes, and I really am freakishly a fan of vegetables. I’m gluten-free by necessity so there are things I MISS, like sourdough bread.

To me it tells how we should approach life, with an eternal marvel, and the eyes and heart of children, and be able to see and feel beyond your senses.

What are you most proud of accomplishing so far in your life? Having a home with wife and daughter and a loving family. It is a safe heaven that allowed us to go through many hurdles and overcome difficulties.
What is your favorite color? Periwinkle. It rolls off the tongue better than any others…
What is your favorite food? Oh my, this is a terrible question because to be honest I have to give a terrible answer. Everything! My wife is a terrific cook and there are amazing tastes and flavours in everything she cooks. I love Pasta and Pesto, her lasagne, her pancakes and tarts, the caponata, and everything else she’s able to put on the table. One of my best accomplishments? Stay fit with all that danger around me daily.
What’s your favorite place in the entire world? I think we can find beauty everywhere in the world, no matter how inhospitable a place can be. If you can see the world in a grain of sand, and heaven in a wild flower, the entire world is a favorite place.

Tell us a bit about your family. My father is a gastroenterologist who grew up in Burma and India, and my mother is a retired nurse and former midwife from England. They immigrated to Canada with me and my brother when I was five years old so that Dad could pursue greater opportunities in nutrition research and clinical practice. (I wrote a book, Lifeliner, on one of his first game-changing patients here in Toronto.) My sister was born after we arrived here. Our parents taught us to strive to be the best and do the best you can. My father told me many hilarious stories about experiments going awry when he was a student, but also taught me a lot about persistence and dedication to one’s work. My mother is the eternal optimist and is a model for volunteerism and initiative.
What is your favorite food? Chocolate! I love dark, rich, organic chocolate. Truffles best of all.
How has your upbringing influenced your writing? My education in Bombay, India began very early in life so that I was already writing by the time I was 3. My first clear memory of school was getting to write, “The cat sat on the mat.” I loved the feel of pencil on paper and perfecting my letters. Both my parents were big readers, and I don’t remember a time when I wasn’t reading. My Dad and his brother told lots of stories. My mother’s side loved poetry, and Dad’s mother would sit me on her lap to tell me fairy tales over and over with no end of patience with my unceasing demands to hear them again. All this reading and story-telling fueled my imagination.
My research skills — the ones I use for my non-fiction writing especially — I learnt in high school and university. But my Dad also taught me about the realities of research and got me started in using the university library when I was still in high school. My fiction too profits from these skills, for I try to ensure I get factual details right … unless I deliberately want to skew them to suit my story.
When and why did you begin writing? I wrote stories and poems from the time I was in grade school and into university. I wrote them because I daydreamed a lot and wanted to write some of the stories I told myself. Writing was just unadulterated fun.
When did you first know you could be a writer? I didn’t consider writing a career for me until I was in my 20s. And even then it seemed optional; I felt that I wasn’t a writer anyway. But I continued to write short stories and articles. And in the 1990s, I began the background research for Lifeliner yet still didn’t think I could be a writer. I didn’t consider myself a writer until after my brain injury in 2000. That turned writing into a must-do for me else I would go crazy even though I had to relearn how to write. I write differently now than I did before the injury. After I published Lifeliner in 2007 and saw the way people responded to not just the story but the way I wrote it, I finally believed that I could be a writer and was one.
What genre are you most comfortable writing? I’m rather eclectic. Every book of mine is different. The one I most enjoyed writing was a time travel novel that I hope to publish this year.
What inspired you to write your first book? I was at the memorial for Judy Taylor, the person Lifeliner is about, when a former boss of mine and fellow Total Parenteral Nutrition patient of Judy’s turned to me and said someone should write her story. I had one of those lightbulb moments. I began working on Lifeliner immediately.

Tell us a bit about your family. I come from a long line of teachers, so books have always been a very important part of my life. Both my parents were teachers, my three sisters are all teachers, and most of my aunts, uncles, and cousins are teachers. I am a retired English professor.
What is your favorite quality about yourself? I am a very loving person. I love being in love. My wife tells me that all the time, and it is very true.
What is your least favorite quality about yourself? I sometimes become impatient by the slow actions of others, but I realize this about myself, and that is a good start to correcting this quality. I’m working on overcoming it.
What is your favorite quote, by whom, and why? My wife told me that one of the first things that made her fall in love with me was the quote on a plaque I have: “Sing as if nobody else is listening.” I love the philosophy behind this quote. It exemplifies the way I feel about myself. I must add that I also really like “Live and let live.” I believe wholeheartedly in this. Not all people share my values or lifestyle, and they have the human right to live the way they see best. It is their life, not mine. I will live mine the way I see best.
What are you most proud of accomplishing so far in your life? I am most proud of having fallen madly in love once again after the tragic death of my first wife. I am proud of the fact that I love two women, although one of them is no longer alive. For several years after her death, I doubted such a thing was possible.
What is your favorite color? I am very partial to green, but I have no idea why. Possibly it is because my mother’s maiden name was Harrington, and the Irish is coming out in me.

Tell us a bit about your family. I grew up with one brother, two hardworking parents and no pets. That might sound like a lonely childhood, but in fact it was quite the opposite. My cousins lived close by and I had a lot of company. Besides, my Dad loved writing, so he spent a lot of time at home! I grew to love books from a young age and read absolutely everything and anything I could get my hands on. Often I read the same books over and over again!
What is your favourite quality about yourself? Whoever said an unexamined life was not worth living got it dead right. I like searching, and I like finding. It`s one of the reasons I like working in an ER environment. I changed countries three times, dropped out of a university degree to study another – Medicine. After graduating I worked in Russia and Israel, picking up the Russian language while I had a chance. Life is one long adventure, and you better live it while you have the chance. This chance is all you got. This attitude is my favourite quality about myself.
What is your least favourite quality about yourself? Do I have to have one? Sigh….all right then! I guess my least favourite quality about myself would be that I put too much on my plate. I wrote my first unpublished book while at college and doing an evening job and sleeping 3 hours at night. Not good. My grades suffered. But you know who else worked a day job and then stayed up all night to write his first two books? Robin Cook.
What is your favourite quote, by whom, and why? Seen on the wall of an Army soldier`s room, bound for Afghanistan: “If you are not living life on the edge, then you are taking up too much room.” Quite self-explanatory, really.
What are you most proud of accomplishing so far in your life? That is a difficult one. If I had to point to any one, it would be having the children. I have two little girls, and as I grew up in a household where my mother was the only woman, I cherish the company of my children. Which is one of the reasons I only write at night, while they sleep.
How has your upbringing influenced your writing? Again, an interesting question. I guess any writer`s life will influence his writing. As a youngster, reading allowed me to escape. I have travelled quite a bit, which gives me a flair for the adventurous life. Hence I love reading about adventures, thrillers and mysteries. As my father wrote literary fiction, I got into that in a big way too. I began writing poetry in my late teens and carried on in my twenties. But I never forgot the Alistair Maclean and Robert Ludlum`s that I read breathlessly as a teenager.
There was an urgency about being in danger, about fighting to break free from it, that I totally got. That was just me, and the literary fiction I read gave the whole thing more colour and reality. For example, I absolutely loved Jack Kerouac`s writing. He used the English language in a swashbuckling, completely novel way. No pun intended there. The entire Beat Generation movement, in my opinion, changed the way we perceive a lot of western literature. True, the beatniks became a cliché and the hippies who followed got faddish, quickly. But the love of experimentation that Kerouac, Ginsberg, Burroughs had was dynamic and exciting. I recognised an adventurous spirit in them that I identified with.
