Author Interview – Ernie Lindsey

Tell us a bit about your family.
A)  I have an amazing, wonderful, understanding wife that sacrifices more than she should, which enables me to continue writing.  I couldn’t do it without her.  We’re also the proud parents of a baby boy who just turned seven months old, and thankfully, our sweetheart kitty has graciously made room for him in the house.
How do you work through self-doubts and fear?
A)  There’s a fantastic quote by Calvin Coolidge that talks about the strength of persistence, and I’ll often go back to it as a reminder to keep my head down and work hard.  The rest will fall into place.  I’d definitely encourage anyone to look it up.
What scares you the most?
A)  Moths.  There, I said it.  I have a phobia of moths.  Don’t judge.  I’m looking at you, guy that’s afraid of the escalator eating his shoes.
What makes you happiest?
A)  The relaxing moments I have with my family, when we’re all huddled together on the couch, reading and napping.
What’s your greatest character strength?
A)  There’s an old saying that goes something like, “Character is what you are in the dark.”  I try to live my life that way, by doing what’s right, being responsible and taking responsibility, and by being the kind of person I’d want to be friends with.
What’s your weakest character trait?
A)   Impatience, but that’s quickly getting remedied by the addition of a baby into the household.  I’m learning to take deep breaths and really grasping the meaning of, “It can wait.”
Why do you write?
A)  I’m the perfect Trivial Pursuit partner, because I know a lot about a little.  Jack of all trades, etc.  But I write because it’s the one thing I believe (not think, believe) that I’m really good at doing, and I love the fact that I can entertain someone, make them laugh or cry, simply by putting words on a page.  Plus, it’s always been a cathartic release for me.
Have you always enjoyed writing?
A)  Fiction, yes.  I was a technical writer for over a decade and it bored me to tears.  I’d lose interest in what I was working on fifteen minutes after I walked in the door every morning, but with fiction, I can lose myself for months within the worlds I create.
What motivates you to write?
A)  Honestly, I don’t know what I’d do if I wasn’t writing, but I’m motivated by the needs of my family (this is a job, no matter how you look at it) and by the desire to always create something better than the last one.
What writing are you most proud of? (Add a link if you like)
A)  I’m proud of everything I write, but the novel I just released, HARMLESS, is by far my favorite.  It’s the longest, most in depth story and character study I’ve done.  The main character, Steve, became so real to me that I started referencing him by his first name when I talked about the novel.
What are you most proud of in your personal life?
A)  Three things: the birth of my son, the strength of my wife, and after all these years of writing, I made it to the USA Today bestseller’s list.
What books did you love growing up?
A)  I started reading a lot of Dean Koontz at a young age, and his novel The Voice of the Night was the first one I can remember reading that made me realize that not all fiction was like the boring stuff we were forced to read in school.  Aside from that, A Wrinkle in Time and anything by Roald Dahl.
Who is your favorite author?
A)  Elmore Leonard.  His dialogue alone is worth the price you pay for each book.
What book genre of books do you adore?
A)  Mystery and thriller.  I’m currently reading The Spy Who Came in from the Cold by John Le Carre and I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to get around to it.
What book should everybody read at least once?
A)  Tomcat in Love by Tim O’Brien.  The things he does with language in that book blow me away every single time I read it.
