Author Interview – Alan Nayes

Tell us a bit about yourself. I’m originally from Texas—born in Houston and grew up in Dallas—but have lived in Southern California for the last several decades. I get back to my home state several times a year to visit family and friends, mostly during the holiday season. Or after a new release so I can convince them to buy a copy! Lol.

What is your favorite quality about yourself? Um, that’s a tough one as I’m having difficulty coming up with one. Seriously, just kidding. I think I’ll answer this in regards to writing. So I’ll have to say my persistence. Without my persistence I’d never have been published, in fact I’d never have completed a book. So yes, persistence.

What is your favorite quality about yourself? I think I get down on myself too much and this can erode confidence in the project I’m working on. Without confidence, a writer will loose belief in his/her project and once an author no longer believes in their project, death of that project is not far behind. So all artists out there in any endeavor—never stop believing in your project. There are enough naysayers out there who will.

What is your favorite quote, by whom, and why? “Mr, Townes, you behave as if stupidity were a virtue.” Not sure why I love this quote. It comes from a movie, though, not a book. THE FLIGHT OF THE PHOENIX. This was the original version, the  one with Jimmy Stewart. Great flick, watch it if you get a chance. Never saw the later remake.

What are you most proud of accomplishing so far in your life? Wow, let me think here a moment. I’ll relate this too writing. I think I was most proud when GARGOYLES was first acquired and bought by a publisher. My “proud moment” outside of writing would have to be finally accomplishing my marathon swim across Lake Winnebago in Wisconsin. Since I was a small child, I’d always dreamed over swimming across the lake. After two failed attempts I finally did it in1999! Yeah, that felt good. Do I swim much anymore—hardly ever.

What is your favorite color? Blue.

What is your favorite food? That’s like what is my favorite song or book. So many. I love to eat—today I’ll say king crab legs.

What’s your favorite place in the entire world? Can’t say specifically because there are a lot of places I’ve yet to visit—Hawaii, China, South Pacific, Antarctica. A couple years ago I visited Yosemite and climbed Half Dome. That was pretty cool.

How has your upbringing influenced your writing? I think the attitudes my parents instilled in me help tremendously with my writing. There’s three in particular. Believe in yourself (regardless of what others believe). The good things in life you strive for usually  do not come easy—it takes hard work. And if you really want something, you better be prepared to keep trying, even if you initially fail because persistent will pay huge dividends. Maybe not these exact words but their philosophy was clear.

Do you recall how your interest in writing originated? Actually it was in college  when I learned to play the guitar and tried my hand at songwriting. Unfortunately I could never hold a tune real well. From there I promised myself only fiction.
