Author Interview – Dakota Madison

Tell us a bit about your family. I live in Arizona with my husband and our two bloodhounds. I grew up in New Jersey and much of my extended family still lives there.

What is your favorite quote, by whom, and why? “Now and then it’s good to pause in our pursuit of happiness and just be happy.” Guillaume Apollinaire

I think it’s important to appreciate the present moment and remember the wonder of just being alive. Sometimes, it’s easy to forget when one is in the midst of trying to accomplish so much.

What are you most proud of accomplishing so far in your life? Earning a Ph.D. was a major accomplishment. If you think writing a novel is difficult, try completing a doctoral dissertation!

What is your favorite color? I don’t really have a favorite; it depends upon my mood. I tend to gravitate more towards purples and blues.

What is your favorite food? I loved rice-based dishes; Asian Indian and Chinese are my favorites.

What’s your favorite place in the entire world? My bed!

Do you recall how your interest in writing originated? I learned to read when I was four years old and immediately told my mom I wanted to write a book. I’ve been writing ever since!

What inspires you to write and why? I usually get a small seed of an idea that I knock around in my mind for a few months until it sprouts and I have a story. Sometimes, I dream scenes and write them down when I wake up. There have been times when I’ve dreamed nearly an entire book.

What genre are you most comfortable writing? I tend to feel more comfortable in the romance, chick lit or romantic comedy arenas. I also enjoy writing for teens and tweens.

What inspired you to write your first book? My first published novel (as Karen Mueller Bryson) was Hey Dorothy You’re Not in Kansas Anymore, which was inspired by my move to Canada as well as my family’s reaction to my father’s death.
