Author Interview – Todd Cheney

What’s your weakest character trait?

Inconsistency in my habits. I tend not to keep up with things that I should.

What’s your greatest character strength?

I think my greatest strength is persistence. Even though I have fallen down so many times, I continue to try and do what needs to be done. I haven’t always had that but it’s been more and more clear that I should keep trying.

Is there any books you really don’t enjoy?

I’ve never quite gotten into crime drama or murder mystery. They just don’t spark my interest. Perhaps it’s because I don’t enjoy being reminded that murders do happen in the real world?

Location and life experiences can really influence writing, tell us where you grew up and where you now live?

Well, I grew up in Wisconsin, USA and continue to live there. The farthest I’ve been as of this interview is Scotland. So I don’t consider myself the traveling type.

What is hardest – getting published, writing or marketing?

Unless you count self-publishing here, by far the hardest for me is getting published. It’s intimidating to realize how many writers there are in the world and how few of all the written books you are seeing when you go into the bookstore. That is a SMALL percentage of every written book, even current ones. It boggles the mind.

Do you find it hard to share your work?

Yes, but only because I feel I am always so close to it that it’s hard to not take criticism very personally, even if it’s meant to be constructive. If I were so dispassionate as to not be affected by negatives about the book from readers or reviewers, I shouldn’t have written anything in the first place. That kind of detachment will come off in the writing of the books.

Do you plan to publish more books?

If I could find the time or motivation to write more, then yes. I had planned more books but haven’t really started any lately.

What else do you do to make money, other than write? It is rare today for writers to be full time…

I’m also a computer programmer/IT specialist. I have a degree in this. I really enjoy it and it helps to pay the bills.

What other jobs have you had in your life?

I’ve worked anything from fast food to telemarketer to janitor. So I’ve been all over the map.

Is there anyone you’d like to acknowledge and thank for their support?

My mother, of course. My writing wouldn’t be possible without her.

What makes you angry?

Feeling left out, shortchanged or generally ignored.
