Author Interview – Vickie McKeehan

Who is your favorite author and why? I have a lot of favorite authors. They all inspire me in different ways. David C. Cassidy inspires me to be a better wordsmith. Elise Stokes to provide a greater adventure. CR Hiatt to write better action scenes. Dawn Torrens to remember to capture the heart. Seb Kirby to write better mysteries. Alan McDermott to go with the gut and forget about conventional characters. Carmen DeSousa to spice up the romance. Patricia Paris to maintain the conflict. Carolyn Arnold to give the reader a strong female character.

Can we expect any more books from you in the future? I always plan for three a year. But I’ll be happy with two.

Have you started another book yet? I always have a book in the works.

Where do you see yourself in five years? I always see myself at the beach. I don’t think that’s what you meant but I always see myself there. I don’t think that’s going to change.

What are your current writing projects now? The Bones Will Tell, the 2nd Skye Cree novel comes out in August 2013. After that, Starlight Dunes, the 5th Pelican Pointe book is due out at Christmas.

Are there any new authors that have sparked your interest and why? All those authors I listed as my favorites. Why? Because each writes a compelling story you’ll want to read.

What contributes to making a writer successful? Keep an open mind. Try new things as a writer. Never say never.

Do you have any advice for writers? Don’t get discouraged. Don’t give up. Keep writing no matter how many rejections you get, no matter what agent drops you, no matter the negative reviews.

Do you have any specific last thoughts that you want to say to your readers? Absolutely. I appreciate your buying and taking the time to read my books. I appreciate it when you leave a review or take the time to message me. After all, without you, I’d still be writing for myself. So thank you for spending your dollars on my work.

What do you do to unwind and relax? I spend time outdoors. I hike. I love nature.

If you could leave your readers with one bit of wisdom, what would you want it to be? Read. Read. Read. You’ll escape to places you could never actually go to in real life. It’s the least expensive way to take an adventure into another era, another character’s mind, another writer’s plot. And how cool is that?

When you wish to end your career, stop writing, and look back on your life, what thoughts would you like to have? I made people laugh. I made people cry. And I always left them with a happy ending.
